I’ve always loved and been involved in sports throughout my life. As a child and teen I competed in a variety of sports such as basketball, track, cross-country, baseball and was a lifeguard at my local YMCA. When I was 16 I watched and was powerless when my mother passed away from a heart attack as a result of obesity, high cholesterol and diabetes. Not having the proper knowledge, I was unable to save her. Losing my mother so early in life dramatically changed me. At that time, I didn't understand how she allowed herself to become so obese which ultimately lead to her death. It was difficult to lose her. I told myself I never wanted to be in that position again, so I began to develop skills which would help me throughout life Soon after, I became a lifeguard and rescued a drowning boy. My training made it possible for me to give him mouth to mouth and bring him back. These two dramatic events were turning points that lead me to realize I wanted to help people live long and healthy lives.
After graduating from high school, I signed up for the military and became a medical specialist in the army. For three years I learned and practiced a variety of medical skills and felt confident that the training I received from the military made me an asset in the medical field.
I decided to start a family of my own so I wanted to end my military term. I found a job as a medical assistant at a family practice and settled down to raise my family. But, like most new moms who dedicate themselves to their families, I forgot to take time for myself. Well, the pounds started pilling on. 80 pounds to be exact. It wasn’t long before I knew I was becoming my mother. I finally realized what she went through and how easy it was to become overweight. Consequently, I started exercising more, eating right and taking time for myself. I started participating and teaching cycling, circuit and water exercise classes at the YMCA. I also became a nutrition consultant for a major weight loss company which has given me the skills I needed to control my hunger and focus on a healthy lifestyle. This gave me the power to control my weight but mostly it uniquely qualified me to assist others with the same challenges.
